2026 Diabetes New Zealand Research Foundation Fellowship open for submissions

Details of the DNZRF fellowship, eligibility criteria, scope, funding and guidelines for applicants are provided below.

The research must be conducted in New Zealand, be specifically related to diabetes and aligned to the DNZRF’s mission statements

Our fellowship is designed to provide support for health professionals (clinical or non-clinical) and academic health researchers to undertake research in a health delivery research team, health sector setting, or health delivery policy setting.

The placement will involve the applicant leading or contributing to research or research-related activities. The research must be conducted in Aotearoa New Zealand and must be specifically related to diabetes and aligned to one of our mission statements above and the New Zealand research attributes outlined below.

Funding includes salary/stipend based on the applicant’s qualifications and research experience supplemented by a $20,000 contribution towards direct consumable costs of the research project. The funding is for 1 FTE of research time over 12 months. However, applicants may undertake this award part-time over a term of up to 36 months (e.g., 0.33 FTE over 36 months). The maximum total possible value of the fellowship is up to $150,000 including all associated salary costs.

It is important to be aware the fellowship provides funding for the individual and a small contribution towards the direct costs of the research, but the candidate, their supervisors and host institution need to confirm the availability of sufficient resources to complete the project. This might include additional project funding from other sources and also, if not already obtained, timelines for any relevant Locality and Ethics approvals.

There are no institutional overhead costs associated with this Fellowship. The DNZRF expects that overhead costs (contributions to property costs or laboratory space, utility charges, equipment charges, laboratory “bench fees”, library charges, etc.) of the research undertaken by Fellowship recipients will be met by the host institution.

A letter of support must be provided from the host organisation(s) to confirm organisational support for the fellowship placement, appropriate supervision and mentoring, for the research or related activities to be undertaken. This must specifically that the necessary resources are in place to ensure the successful completion of their award with a letter from their supervisor or host institution.

Applications close at midday on 16 March 2026. For further information and to submit your application, please read the documents available for download below:
